An application namely, <a href=\"http:\/\/lameandroidhero.bitbucket.org\/?page=texportal_intro\"><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal<\/a> in combination with <a href=\"http:\/\/lameandroidhero.bitbucket.org\/?page=texportal_intro\"><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>pert<\/a> will make a complete <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> system in your Android tablet or smart phone. <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal is a complete <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Live distribution ported for Android and <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>pert is a full fledged text editor and integrated development environment within which the user can create, edit, run the compiler, view and debug without leaving it. As such anybody who has a user knowledge of <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> can make a try confidently. Standard <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Live installation in desktops need around 300 Meg space while <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal needs only 2 Meg for pdf<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> alone plus 40 Meg for <span class=\"LATEX\">L<span class=\"A\">A<\/span><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span><\/span>, half of which will be installed on the fly as and when need arises. Hence, this is a big boon for limited storage devices.<\/p>\n<p>The main features include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"org-ul\">\n<li><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal is optimized for mobile devices.<\/li>\n<li>It is a complete <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Live distribution ported for Android, keeping a minimal installation to begin with. However, as and when the submitted documents require more and more advanced packages, those will be downloaded dynamically from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctan.org\">CTAN<\/a> and installed as and when needed, provided the device is connected to the Internet.<\/li>\n<li>All popular macro libraries like <span class=\"LATEX\">L<span class=\"A\">A<\/span><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span><\/span> and Con<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>t are available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"figure2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cvr.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shot-tp-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-865\" src=\"http:\/\/cvr.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shot-tp-1.png\" alt=\"shot-tp-1\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span class=\"figure-number\">Figure 2:<\/span> A screen shot of source and compiled output of a document that uses a relatively complicated document class and supporting packages.<\/div>\n<ul class=\"org-ul\">\n<li>All standard compilers like <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>, pdf<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>, Xe<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> and Lua<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> are available.<\/li>\n<li>Internet connection is not mandatory for <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal to work if the user does not want to download any package from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctan.org\">CTAN<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The output shown on the right is not in PDF format, but is a <code>.png<\/code> version of the output which makes the loading and refreshing output with repeated runs of <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> faster. <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>pert has its own integrated viewer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"sec-0-1\">Non-Latin documents<\/h2>\n<p>Given below is a screen shot (<a href=\"#figure3\">Figure 3<\/a>) of a document written in Malayalam (a language with complex script spoken in Kerala, southern India where I live) and compiled using Xe<span class=\"LATEX\">L<span class=\"A\">A<\/span><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span><\/span>. I have used a nice custom font, viz., <a href=\"http:\/\/smc.org.in\/fonts\/\">Rachana<\/a> and Xe<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> did its job very well without any hassles. To install this font in my Android devices, I just needed to create a sub-directory Fonts in the sd card and copy the <code>.ttf<\/code> or <code>.otf<\/code> version of the font to the <code>Fonts<\/code> directory. Once this is completed, we need to regenerate the font cache afresh by pressing the menu item <b>Generate Fonts Cache<\/b> in the left panel of <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal interface (See <a href=\"#figure5\">Figure 5<\/a>) to facilitate Xe<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> to access system fonts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"figure3\" class=\"figure\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cvr.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shot-tp-5.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-865\" src=\"http:\/\/cvr.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shot-tp-5.png\" alt=\"shot-tp-5\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span class=\"figure-number\">Figure 3:<\/span> A screen shot of source and output of a Malayalam document.<\/div>\n<ul class=\"org-ul\">\n<li><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal provides a big advantage of keeping document sources locally in user&#8217;s devices, instead of uploading to or authoring in a remote server controlled by third parties.<\/li>\n<li>Since there is no need to send document sources to a remote server and run it from there, the output generation is faster, debugging is easier and no data charges are incurred. Edit\u2013compile\u2013view\u2013debug cycle is relatively hassle-free than in a cloud based framework.<\/li>\n<li>Confidentiality of data, which is of paramount importance for researchers till the article is published or released in a preprint server like <a href=\"http:\/\/arXiv.org\">arXiv<\/a>, is seldom compromised. Additionally, the system works fine even if you&#8217;re on a plane.<\/li>\n<li>No rooting of the device is necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"figure4\" class=\"figure\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cvr.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shot-tp-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-865\" src=\"http:\/\/cvr.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shot-tp-2.png\" alt=\"shot-tp-2\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span class=\"figure-number\">Figure 4:<\/span> A screen shot of source and output of the documentation of tufte document class.<\/div>\n<p>All the fonts that are downloadable from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctan.org\">CTAN<\/a> can be installed in <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal as with any packages. I have tested many fonts like Libertine, Charter, mathpazo, Source Sans Pro, Inconsolata, newtxmath, and many more. Everything worked like a charm to my entire satisfaction.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"sec-0-2\">Functionality of <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal<\/h2>\n<p>The screen shot in <a href=\"#figure5\">Figure 5<\/a> shows how <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal downloads and installs missing packages when a document is typeset. In this case, when I tried to typeset the Malayalam document shown in <a href=\"#figure3\">Figure 3<\/a>, packages like, <code>fontspec<\/code>, <code>l3kernel<\/code>, <code>l3packages<\/code>, etc., were not found in the device and hence those are being installed (see the right panel).<\/p>\n<p>The interface has been vertically divided into two \u2014 left and right panels. The left panel is further divided into four parts:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"org-ol\">\n<li>Compilation<\/li>\n<li>Kill Process<\/li>\n<li>Installation<\/li>\n<li>Management<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The screen shots of a smart phone showing various menus are available <a href=\"http:\/\/lameandroidhero.bitbucket.org\/?page=texportal_screenshots\">here<\/a>. It might be useful to take a look at these shots.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"org-ul\">\n<li>The Compilation menu has two items, the first line is a choice menu where one can choose from, <code>tex<\/code>, <code>latex<\/code>, <code>context<\/code>, <code>pdftex<\/code>, <code>pdflatex<\/code>, <code>xetex<\/code>, <code>xelatex<\/code>, <code>luatex<\/code>, <code>lualatex<\/code>, <code>bibtex<\/code>, <code>dvips<\/code>, <code>makeindex<\/code>, <code>metapost<\/code>, <code>ps2pdf<\/code> and <code>eps2pdf<\/code>. One can see that most of the binary programs needed are covered in the above list except <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>4ht and related stuff. We need to explore further so that <code>html<\/code> generation from <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> sources becomes a handy affair. On the right of this we have a <b>start<\/b> button to start a compilation job with the chosen compiler.<\/li>\n<li>The second line where the submitted file name with path is given, which when touched, will open up a file dialog box through which the user can easily select the desired input file.<\/li>\n<li>The <b>Kill<\/b> button allows to terminate a process if you know the <code>pid<\/code> of that process which can be provided left of the button.<\/li>\n<li>The user can install individual packages from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctan.org\">CTAN<\/a> if he desires so by providing the package name at <b>Packages to install<\/b> and the <b>Install<\/b> button does the job.<\/li>\n<li><b>Open<\/b> button helps to see the <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> installation location with <b>File Manager<\/b> application (or similar one, a choice of apps available are presented from which users might choose) and do any kind of file operations. The tree structure is compliant with TDS.<\/li>\n<li>The <b>Management<\/b> menu provides four buttons:\n<ul class=\"org-ul\">\n<li><b>Grant Storage Permission<\/b> \u2014 to grant <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal necessary permission to a folder to execute its job.<\/li>\n<li><b>Generate Fonts Cache<\/b> \u2014 refresh system <code>fonts cache<\/code> when new fonts are installed in the device.<\/li>\n<li><b>Reload Con<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>t Fonts<\/b> \u2014 refresh font list for Con<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>t.<\/li>\n<li><b>Edit pdf<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span> Font Map<\/b> \u2014 edit font map file used by pdf<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"figure5\" class=\"figure\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cvr.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shot-tp-4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-865\" src=\"http:\/\/cvr.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/shot-tp-4.png\" alt=\"shot-tp-4\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span class=\"figure-number\">Figure 5:<\/span> A screen shot of source, output and the keyboard.<\/div>\n<p>The screen shot in <a href=\"#figure6\">Figure 6<\/a> provides the scenario when a compilation of a document is finished. Users at their will can open the <code>log<\/code> file by pressing on the <b>pencil<\/b> icon found at the right top of the window. The panel provides several icons that are self-explanatory. The only thing that needs to be pointed out is that the panel also provides headings of various sectional units and graphic files names of included as in an outline.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"org-ul\">\n<li><b>Compile document<\/b>: click to compile with primary engine (pdf<span class=\"LATEX\">L<span class=\"A\">A<\/span><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span><\/span> by default), long click to do Bib<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Open document<\/b>: click on the button to browse your SD card, Google Drive or Dropbox for the document to open, long click to pick up a document from a list of recently opened document.<\/li>\n<li><b>View PDF<\/b>: click to view PDF (either split the screen or show the PDF full screen, depending on how you last close the PDF viewer), when the PDF viewer opens, it will attempt to jump to the position corresponding to the cursor position, long click to view PDF in external app such as Adobe Reader.<\/li>\n<li><b>Extra keyboard<\/b>: can select which keys to show in the Settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"figure\"><a id=\"figure7\" name=\"figure7\"><\/a><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" id=\"figure7\" src=\"http:\/\/lameandroidhero.bitbucket.org\/img\/texpert_action_panel.png\" alt=\"screen shot image\" width=\"50%\" align=\"middle\" \/><br \/>\n<span class=\"figure-number\">Figure 7:<\/span> Screen shot of action panel of <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>pert as seen in a smart phone.<\/div>\n<p>Following commands are available if compatible keyboard is chosen. The<br \/>\napplication namely, Hackers&#8217; Keyboard is the one that I used for this<br \/>\npurpose.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"org-ul\">\n<li><b>File commands<\/b>\n<ul class=\"org-ul\">\n<li><code>Ctrl+N<\/code> Create new document<\/li>\n<li><code>Ctrl+O<\/code> Open existing document (from SD card, Google Drive or Dropbox)<\/li>\n<li><code>Ctrl+S<\/code> Save current document<\/li>\n<li><code>Ctrl+T<\/code> or <code>F1<\/code> Compile main document using the primary engine<br \/>\n(pdf<span class=\"LATEX\">L<span class=\"A\">A<\/span><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span><\/span> by default, change in Settings).<\/li>\n<li><code>Ctrl+B<\/code> or <code>F2<\/code> Do Bib<span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span><\/li>\n<li><code>Ctrl+P<\/code> View PDF: either split the screen to show the editor and PDF side-by-side or show PDF in full screen. It provides fast syntax highlighting with little lagging. Noteworthy capability is mathematical formula highlighting, a feature rarely provided by editors.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>pert understands <span class=\"LATEX\">L<span class=\"A\">A<\/span><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span><\/span> unlike general purpose text editors. It offers easy access to frequently used symbols in <span class=\"LATEX\">L<span class=\"A\">A<\/span><span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span><\/span> documents such as dollar and backslash, hierarchical document outline (i.e. <code>\\chapter<\/code>, <code>\\section<\/code>, <code>\\subsection<\/code>, etc.), annotated log, etc. <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>pert also provides smart code completion and is user configurable.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"sec-2\">Additional applications<\/h2>\n<p>A few additional applications are useful to make the <span class=\"TEX\">T<span class=\"E\">E<\/span>X<\/span>Portal setup more productive and convenient. <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.ttxapps.dropsync\">Dropsync<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.lite\">Foldersync<\/a> help user to sync a designated folder in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dropbox.com\">Dropbox<\/a> or a variety of cloud frameworks to sync with a folder in the Android devices.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sec-2-1\">Dropsync<\/h3>\n<p>Dropsync lets you automatically sync and share unlimited files and folders with Dropbox and with your other trusted devices. Sync and share any files! Photos, videos, documents, PDF, MP3, ebooks, backups, \u2026<\/p>\n<ul class=\"org-ul\">\n<li>Full two-way auto-sync running in background, just like Dropbox on desktop.<\/li>\n<li>Many sync modes.
